Supporting safer care—AHCA releases Safe Steps Forward falls toolkit

By Michaun Shetler | May 28, 2026 | SNF and assisted living providers

The recently released Safe Steps Forward toolkit from the American Health Care Association (AHCA) offers practical, evidence-informed resources to help providers strengthen fall prevention efforts across skilled nursing and assisted living settings. Providers are encouraged to review the toolkit and incorporate strategies, tools, and processes that align with their organization’s resident population, operational structure, and quality improvement goals.

Falls remain one of the most common adverse events impacting residents and can lead to serious injury, reduced independence, decreased functional ability, and diminished quality of life. While not every fall can be prevented, implementing proactive, person-centered interventions and continuously evaluating outcomes are essential components of quality care and resident safety.

The toolkit includes a variety of resources designed to support interdisciplinary teams in identifying fall risk factors, implementing targeted interventions, enhancing staff awareness, and strengthening quality assurance and performance improvement (QAPI) efforts. The materials may also serve as a valuable resource for providers looking to review current practices, reinforce existing fall prevention programs, or identify opportunities for improvement.

Providers are encouraged to explore the Safe Steps Forward toolkit and determine which strategies and resources may be beneficial within their own settings.
Additional information and resources are available through AHCA/NCAL. Download your copy today! Questions regarding the toolkit may be directed to [email protected]
