The
Governor’s Workforce Development Board (GWDB) is a statewide board that recommends workforce development policies to the governor and legislature. The GWDB
met jointly with the Minnesota Association of Workforce Boards (MAWB) recently—Association staff, Nicole Mattson, sits on the GWDB and vice-chairs the MAWB board. The combined group got to hear from the new Commissioner for the Department of Employment & Economic Development (DEED), Matt Varilek. Commissioner Varilek spoke about the need to leverage business perspectives, particularly from rural Minnesota to develop successful strategies and strengthen workforce solutions. We also heard from the state of Colorado and their
sector partnership approach, which was similar to DEED’s
Drive for Five initiative. We also discussed
timelines and plans to develop and approval the state, regional, and local Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) plans.
