AL survey tip—Resident rights & resident handbooks

By Michaun Shetler  |  January 12, 2024  |  Assisted living providers

Many assisted living providers create a resident handbook in addition to their assisted living contract. The resident handbook provides useful information to help the resident throughout their tenancy, from helpful tips, additional terms and conditions of the contract, use of the facility, and services available to residents just to name a few.

It is important to remember that when creating or revising a resident handbook, resident rights cannot be waived or violated in the process. As MDH continues to survey AL providers they have been seeing this issue come up recently.

When providers violate the rights of a resident, they are subject to fines and licensing actions.
